Methane emissions – a central lever in climate protection Strong impact. Short lifespan. Great responsibility.

Methane (CH₄) is an extremely potent greenhouse gas with an atmospheric lifespan of about 12 years.

Although it is shorter-lived than carbon dioxide (CO₂), it has more than 80 times the global warming potential over a 20-year period, as it traps heat in the atmosphere much more effectively.

Where does methane come from? Sources in Germany

In Germany, over 75% of total methane emissions come from agriculture. The main sources are:

  • Enteric fermentation: Methane is produced in the digestive systems of ruminants such as cattle and sheep. This process contributes significantly to emissions.
  • Manure management: The storage and spreading of liquid and solid manure also causes substantial amounts of methane.
  • Other contributors include waste management, wastewater treatment, and the energy sector – particularly due to gas infrastructure leaks.

Regulatory pressure is increasing

Given methane’s high climate impact, the gas is increasingly becoming the focus of legal regulations. The European Union has introduced new directives, particularly obligating the energy sector to monitor and reduce emissions.

Germany also faces the need for action – especially in agriculture.  The federal government has committed to significantly reducing methane emissions by 2030. To achieve this, comprehensive measures are necessary, including both technical solutions and structural changes in livestock farming and manure management.

THE SOLUTION: BIOMETHANE AS A CLEAN ALTERNATIVE ENERGY SOURCE

Complete solutions for the recovery and purification of biogas directly on site

Producing biomethane from landfills, dairies, and wastewater treatment plants via anaerobic digestion not only reduces methane emissions into the atmosphere – it can also represent an attractive additional income stream for plant operators:

  • Feeding the purified gas into the grid and selling it to energy suppliers
  • Cost savings through using self-produced biomethane for fueling vehicle fleets
  • In-house electricity generation via combined heat and power (CHP)
