1976–1985 | The children learn to walk

International expansion, new technologies and a strong foundation for the future

1976 – The first subsidiary

BAUER COMPRESSORS Inc. is founded in Norfolk, Virginia (USA) – with just two employees.

Today, it has grown into an economically strong company with an annual turnover of 35 million US dollars – and an important cornerstone of BAUER's international presence.

At the same time, Heinz Bauer takes over management of the plant in Munich and plays a key role in shaping the future of the family business.

1976

1977 – Ice-cold technology: cryogenic compression with helium

BAUER compressors are successfully used in cryogenic technology.

Process:

  • Liquid helium is heated during use → it evaporates
  • The resulting helium gas is compressed by BAUER compressors to 200 bar
  • Then it is fed back into the liquefaction plant

Areas of application: research, medicine, supercooling

1979 – Move to the new headquarters

A forward-looking step:

BAUER relocates its headquarters to Drygalski-Allee 37 (Munich).

Focus:

  • Development and manufacture of high-pressure reciprocating systems
  • Integration of air and gas treatment systems
  • Planning and construction of complete high-pressure systems for industry and breathing air

1980 – New applications in the USA

BAUER COMPRESSORS Inc. delivers the first compressor system for natural gas filling stations (CNG) in the USA – a market that will grow steadily over the coming decades.

  • Just three years later, a separate firefighting unit is established, with specially developed compressor systems for forest fires.

1980

1983 – ROTORCOMP is born

Another subsidiary is established at the original location on Wolfratshauser Straße:

ROTORCOMP VERDICHTER GmbH

Specialising in:

  • Development and manufacture of screw compressor modules for OEMs

This new unit strengthens the BAUER portfolio in the field of screw technology in the long term.
